Meet the Crew

Every story is a new creation aboard the Story Ship. The same six characters, different adventures — so kids build real bonds with the crew as they build their Mandarin.

The full WanderWords crew
Líng

Líng 灵

The one everyone trusts. When the ship lands somewhere new and things go sideways, Líng figures out how everyone's feeling before anyone says a word. Her gold bell means everything's going to be okay.

Mèng

Mèng 梦

He's staring at the clouds while everyone is panicking. He's also usually right. The smallest member of the crew, with the biggest imagination — and no interest in explaining himself.

Yǒng

Yǒng 勇

Every problem is an engineering challenge. He likes to build things, measure things and climbs up everywhere - with complete confidence and occasional miscalculation.

Qí

Qí 奇

He's already sprinted toward the strange door before anyone agreed it was a good idea. Qí's curiosity is what starts every adventure - and his green scarf is always windswept.

Míng

Míng 明

He's read every book on the ship. He knows what the ancient inscription says, what the legend means - and quietly, which new Mandarin words your child will learn in today's story.

Fēng

Fēng 风

Fast, funny and her blue backpack always contains exactly the wrong things for the situation. Nobody knows what's in there. She zooms around with confidence and somehow manages to turn every mixup into a fun learning adventure.

A new adventure. Every day.

Six amazing characters. Six incredible worlds. A new story every day.

Every story is curated and calibrated to what your child already knows, while teaching them a little more. Your child picks the world. The crew takes it from there!

The Daily Loop

Three steps. Ten minutes. Done.

Every story builds on the last. Your child's character bank tracks every character they've met — so the next adventure always starts exactly where they left off. The crew does the teaching. The story does the work.

Beyond the story

Every session leaves something behind.

Every adventure builds the bank. Every session earns a worksheet. Progress you can see.

A story written just for them

Every adventure is generated fresh — calibrated to exactly what your child already knows, and built to teach 3–5 new characters through the story itself. No two reads are ever the same.

After every story, WanderWords generates a practice worksheet using the characters from that session — stroke order, meaning, context from the story. Real reinforcement, zero prep.

For families where Mandarin matters

The language doesn't have to fade.

For many families, Mandarin isn't just a subject — it's a connection. To grandparents, to culture, to a part of your child's identity you want them to feel is theirs.

Not a drill. Not exam prep. A world your child wants to come back to — where the language lives inside stories, not worksheets.

Whether Mandarin fills your home already or it's something you're building toward — the crew meets your child exactly where they are.

Ling and the WanderWords crew
Wherever you're starting

Whatever your child knows today, the crew can work with that.

One subscription. Whatever stage. Whatever pace.

"We speak Mandarin at home, but our child's reading isn't keeping up."

The most common starting point. Your child understands more than they can read — WanderWords bridges that gap. Stories are built around what they already know.

"Our child goes to Chinese school on weekends."

WanderWords aligns to HSK and YCT curricula, so vocabulary from class starts appearing inside real stories at home. Weekend school and daily adventures reinforce each other.

"We're starting from scratch — no Chinese background in our family."

The Starter 500 path is built for this. No prior knowledge needed. Onboarding takes two minutes and finds your child's starting point. The crew will take it from there.

"Our child tried Mandarin before and lost motivation."

Flashcards didn't do it. Drills didn't do it. But your child has never tried following a plot where they choose the adventure. Qí has a way of making even the most reluctant reader want to know what happens next.

One subscription. Whatever they know today. However fast they grow.

FAQ

Questions worth asking.

That's the most common starting point. During onboarding you'll set your child's level based on what they understand, not what they can read. The app builds from there, using stories to turn listening comprehension into reading confidence.

No. The stories are adventures first. Míng introduces new vocabulary naturally inside the story — it doesn't feel like a lesson, because it isn't framed as one.

Duolingo teaches through drills and repetition. WanderWords teaches through story. Your child isn't practising language — they're following a plot, and Mandarin is what lets them do that. The difference in motivation over weeks and months is significant.

You choose at onboarding: HSK 1–3, YCT 1–4, or our own Starter 500 list. You can switch at any time. The app tracks your child's character bank against whichever path you're on.

Yes. Each child gets their own learner profile with a separate character bank, story history, and progress tracking. Additional children are $1.99/month each.

The core experience — stories, worksheets, progress tracking — is fully built and working today. New features ship regularly, shaped by feedback from our early families. And you lock in the founding price for as long as you stay.
